The Process

How ever you found me, I am so glad you did! I look forward to pointing a camera at you and capturing your family!

Step One:  The details! (if we haven’t already) we decide on a date, time & location.

  • Timing: for smaller clients I always want to avoid nap and meal times. Cranky kiddos do not make good photos. We also keep in mind the lighting and weather concerns.
  • Location: We can shoot just about anywhere! I am happy to give suggestions, and take them too. If you have spots special to your family lets talk about it! I have shot everywhere from the Oregon State Fair, a mannequin store, a burned out building  to people’s homes. Location choice is an important discussion, let’s talk about it! I do have a studio space in downtown Newberg, OR that can be used. I always to prefer shoot on location, but that is also available.

Step Two: What to wear! Click here to find a blog post about this very topic! I am happy to consult on this too. Feel free to text or email me photos of ideas, or any questions!

Step Three: We plan! Let’s talk about the goals of this session. You booked this session for a reason right? Do you want a big beautiful print for you walls? Do you want a family album for your bookcase? Do you want to update images in your digital frame? Are holiday cards right around the corner? You can see my portrait product offerings here and my holiday card offerings here. Think about what items speak to you, and we can shoot with them in mind. I am also happy answer any questions you have about products and cards!

Step Four: We shoot! My family and child sessions are fun, laid back and somewhat un-posed. While I will ask you to be in the best light, and location, I also want to grab real moments. It might feel like the kids are goofing off, but I promise that is when the magic happens! Some times kids need to warm up so we go slow. Sometimes the kids are really interested in the weird lady with the big camera, so go fast. If you trust me and let me do my thing, I promise you we will make some great images! Sessions can go as fast as 30 mins, or take up to an hour or so. Most sessions with kids under 4 are pretty quick. Kids are interested in me, we play, then they are over it. Newborn sessions are the exception, these little ones do not care about our schedule at all. I like to plan 2-4 hours for newborn sessions to make plenty of time for food and diaper breaks.

Step Five: We peek! As I work on your images I will periodically show you sneak peeks on instagram, facebook and my blog. If you prefer kids names not being used, or anything like that just let me know ahead of time. I am happy to accommodate that.

Step Six: We view & order! I invite every client to view the slideshow of images in my studio 2-3 weeks after the session has been shot. I will also have printed proofs for you to check out. We will go over all the portrait products in person. I feel strongly that people need to see & touch items in person. At this meeting I will show you albums, canvases, wood prints and other products. I am also happy to customize wall display ideas for your home, all you need to do is text me a photo of your walls and I can mock it up! This meeting can be just you, or the whole family. I always keep toys and snacks in the studio to keep the little ones occupied. I will walk you through the entire ordering process at this meeting, so you come out with the right fit for your family and home. Sometimes getting out to Newberg is hard for my far away clients. If possible I am happy to come to your home for this meeting. Let me know if that is a concern and we will talk it though. 🙂

Step Seven: Enjoy! What ever you end up with, I want you to enjoy your images. After albums are approved & printed, or wall art is boxed up, I send it directly to you. If you want any advice on hanging, or care for your products I am always available to you via email or phone.

Step Eight: We schedule the next shoot! I love to watch families grow! It has been my pleasure to work with families and take their photos for over 10 years at this point! Some of my very first clients came to me as newborns, and are now reading, writing and playing in little league! I would be honored to capture your children and families for many years to come.

If you have ANY questions about this process please let me know. I am always here to help.
